Laser Cutting Machine Cutting Head Failure And Maintenance

Nov 23, 2024

Electrodes and nozzles are the most consumed consumable parts in the daily operation of CNC plasma cutting machines and laser cutting machines, especially imported electrodes and nozzles. Therefore, effectively extending the service life of electrodes and nozzles will greatly reduce the production cost of plasma cutting processing. The consumption of electrodes and nozzles is related to various factors such as air pressure, cooling water pressure, voltage, current, air supply quality and consumable parts quality. We must also pay attention to some abnormal consumption caused by machine failure. I have encountered the phenomenon that the cutting machine frequently burns out sets of electrodes and nozzles as soon as the arc strikes, and some burn out within 0.5 to 1 hour after cutting. These are not normal consumption.
After inspection, it was found that the arc generated between the electrode and the nozzle sintered the edges of the electrode and the nozzle. To this end, measures such as using different types of electrodes and nozzles, replacing new cutting guns, and adjusting air and water pressure were taken. Although the effect changed somewhat, it was not significant, and it returned to normal inexplicably from time to time. After repeated inspections, it was found that the fault was caused by an accidental air cut during the cutting process. A segmented investigation found that the solenoid valve in the electric valve console lost power, causing a gas outage. The loss of power to the solenoid valve was due to the back and forth dragging of the cutting torch trolley, resulting in poor contact of the cutting torch control cable. Since the gas outage time is very short and it is in good condition when measured, the fault is difficult to find. It is during this short gas outage time that the electrode and nozzle are burned. After repairing the fixed cable again, the fault was eliminated.
